For years, Skippy has been the only brand of peanut butter I have eaten, and this year I began to question why. I love peanut butter. Sometimes I think I love it more than most people, so when I realised that stores such as Village Grocer and Ben's Independent Grocer have started bringing in other brands of the stuff, I figured it was time for a taste test! And so, off to Village Grocer I went with the intention of picking up a bottle of Sanitarium peanut butter under advisement from a friend, and instead, left with 3 bottles. If you read this blog, you know I'm not known for moderation.

As a note, my preference is Crunchy peanut butter, but all these brands carry smooth as well.

[The Contenders]

I don't think there are many sights as beautiful as the Sun gleaming behind 3 jars of peanut butter, but I'm wrong. It's more beautiful when there are 4.

There's only a small tub of Skippy's because it is the worst peanut butter ever and my mother is trying to finish it off before we forsake the brand.

[Skippy's Chunky Peanut Butter]

As you can see, the colour is rather dark and it's quite dense and sticky in its texture. As much as I love peanut butter, I've never been able to eat obscene amounts of Skippy's purely because it can get a little cloying after a while and I've realised why. After trying other brands, it's much saltier and more concentrated in flavour, which can only mean there's stuff that's not purely peanut butter in there!

Next up, Sanitarium!

[Sanitarium's Crunchy Peanut Butter]

As you can see from the colour, it's considerably lighter than Skippy and it's a little more fluid and less dense. It's truly a creamy peanut butter with nuts in it and I cannot tell you how absolutely delicious it is! It's far less cloying because the flavour is milder and more subtle. Sanitarium, as opposed to being a mental institution, is in fact a brand known for natural foods that contain less preservatives than the norm. Top that off with the fact that it's a Metallica song, and it's by far the best peanut butter ever!

Honestly though, best peanut butter ever! EVER!

And finally:

[Peanut Butter & Co's Crunch Time]

This is more similar to Skippy than Sanitarium in that it is rather dense and sticky. It's also a little more salty, but I used this to bake peanut butter bread with and it came out absolutely amazing! AMAZING! If you are a fan of peanut butter, you need to try the recipe out because your life will be complete thereafter.

This is better than Skippy, but my favourite is definitely Sanitairum. If you've never tried it, you really need to go get yourself a bottle. I've seen it in Village Grocer and Jaya Grocer and the variance in price between these three is only RM1 here and there so it's not that big a difference.

And of course, there's a bonus to this.

[Peanut Butter & Co's Dark Chocolate Dreams]

I do believe the other name of this is "Heaven". It's so, so amazing! It's not a chocolate spread. It's a peanut butter chocolate spread! That's right! It's peanut butter blended with dark chocolate. I don't know about you, but I haven't heard of anything more awesome. This negates the need for Nutella in the house because what I've been doing this is mixing this in with Sanitarium's peanut butter on bread and eating it for the last few weeks like the fatty that I am. This is a creamy formula so there are not chunks in it which means that it's the only thing on this planet as good as Nutella is. It retails at RM22, but it's worth all of it! As a healthy snack, eating a banana with this is unparalleled!

  1. I struggle to polish of a jar of peanut butter but occasionally I will do a straight-up peanut butter shot on a spoon in the same way a highly stressed Joe might do a vodka shot but that's a far as you'll get me into peanut butter.
I always pick up a couple of giant jars of Skippy (the made in USA not China version) when I am abroad. It's not for me but for the family who seem to eat peanut butter all day long.
You clearly love your P-butter. I'm more of a plain old butter person. Butter for everything. Life is always better with real butter.

    1. Haha the peanut butter spoon shot is my modus operandi at night! Definitely get the family to try Sanitarium instead. They will undoubtedly be sold on how much better it is!
Butter can scarcely be beaten though. Peanut butter will never be as versatile. However, peanut butter gets a vote from me for being able to murder people with allergies. I approve.

    2. Thick layers of peanut butter + butter (with an optional sprinkle of sugar) on a slice of bread. That's all I'm going to say.
